Atlantic Hurricane Season 2025: Homeowner Preparedness Guide for Myrtle Beach & the Grand Strand

Hurricane season is almost here – funny how it comes around each year on June 1, and for those of us living in Myrtle Beach, the Grand Strand, and all along the South Carolina coast, it’s important to be ready.

The Atlantic Hurricane Season starts June 1 and runs through the end of November. Every year, we hope for the best, hoping no major storm will hit our shoreline, or close to home, but it’s always smart to prepare for the worst.

This year, the prediction is an active and above average US landfall threat.

Atlantic Hurricane Season 2025: Homeowner Preparedness Guide for Myrtle Beach & the Grand Strand

Here’s our simple guide to getting your home and family ready for whatever this 2025 hurricane season brings.

1. Review Your Insurance

Before the storms start rolling in, take a good look at your homeowners and flood insurance. Make sure your coverage is up to date and that you know exactly what’s covered.

If you’re not sure, make that call to your insurance agent and ask questions. Don’t wait until a storm is on the way! By then, it might be too late to make changes.

2. Make a Family Emergency Plan

Sit down with your family and talk about what you’ll do if a hurricane heads our way. Decide where you’ll go if you need to evacuate: maybe a friend’s house inland, family members up north, or a local shelter.

Pick a meeting spot in case you get separated. Write down important phone numbers and make sure everyone knows how to reach each other.

NOTE: Create this plan now so it’s ready at the first hint of a hurricane approaching.

3. Build a Hurricane Kit

You don’t want to be searching for supplies when a storm is coming. Put together a hurricane kit now and keep it in a safe, easy-to-reach place.

Here’s the minimum of what you’ll need:

  • Bottled water (enough for 3 days, for each person in your home)
  • Non-perishable food (like canned goods and prepackaged snacks)
    • Can opener (hand cranked)
    • Small outdoor camping stove + fuel
  • Flashlights and extra batteries
  • Phone chargers + power banks (especially portable ones)
  • First aid kit and any medicines you need
  • Important papers (IDs, insurance info) in a waterproof bag
  • Cleaning supplies
    • Trash bags
    • Gloves
    • Paper towels
    • Clorox
    • Broom and dustpan
    • Masks

4. Protect Your Home

Walk around your home and look for things that could become a problem in a storm.

  • fix loose shingles
  • clean out gutters
  • check your windows and doors

If you have storm shutters, make sure they work. If not, have plywood ready to cover windows. Bring in anything from your yard that could blow away, like patio furniture or garden tools.

5. Back Up Important Documents

Take photos of your important documents and store them on your phone or in the cloud. This way, if something happens to the originals, you’ll still have copies.

It’s also a good idea to take pictures and a video of your home and belongings for insurance purposes.

6. Stay Informed

Download a weather app or get a weather radio so you can keep up with the latest updates. Listen to local news and pay attention to any evacuation orders.

If officials say it’s time to leave, don’t wait, but go as soon as you can.

‘Be Prepared’ is Not Just a Boy Scout Motto!

Preparing now can save you a lot of stress later. Hurricanes are a part of life here on the coast, but with a little planning, you can keep your family and your home safe.
